World Mental Health Day is a good opportunity to remind you that there may be people around us who need our support and help more than others. The problem of exclusion of mentally ill people and people suffering from emotional problems was also pointed out by the singer Ed Sheeran and Prince Harry, who in a short video ask for attention to people with problems.
Prince Harry and Ed Sheeran in a bid to mark World Mental Health Day
Prince Harry has a long history of dealing with depressed people. He often stresses in his speeches that this is a serious problem, mainly concerning the so-called Millenials, i.e. young adults. Therefore, he did not hesitate to appear in a short video. The prince thinks that depression is a subject that is still being talked about too little. He also decided that Ed Sheeran should write a song on the subject, because with his popularity and talent, it would be possible to reach more people. The musician says he wants to stop joking about the color of the hair of both of them and confirms that being stigmatized for a variety of reasons can be a real problem. The film is kept in a slightly humorous tone, in fact, it draws attention to a very serious problem.
World Mental Health Day 2019
This year's World Mental Health Day on 10 October is dedicated to suicide. Dr Alberto Trimboli, President of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), stresses that any self-destructive behaviour can be prevented if it is brought to the forefront of attention. That is why it is so important to observe people with mental disabilities, who are often in our immediate environment.
Statistics show that every 40 seconds somebody in the world loses their life because of suicide. This means that around 800,000 people die in this way every year. It is often the case that a few suicide attempts prepare for the last one, which, unfortunately, will be successful. The key to the prevention of any disorders that may lead to suicide is proper role play by people in the patient's immediate environment, i.e. friends, family, friends, teachers and educators. Often it is their attention and concern that makes it possible to save a person's life. A rapid response can save lives, as Dr. Kestel, President of the World Health Organisation, stressed in her speech on the occasion of this year's World Mental Health Day.
The alarming data are provided by the latest statistics, which show that suicide is currently the second highest cause of death among 15-29 year olds.
Mental health promotion
The celebration of this year's World Mental Health Day was also intended to highlight the role of mental health promotion. First of all, it is time to end the stigmatisation of mentally ill people. In addition, it is extremely important to take care of one's own mental health and report to specialists if you feel difficulties that do not allow you to function normally. It is also important to realize that only a person in mental well-being is able to cope well with their limitations and strive for self-development.
